Our Story

It began with the Lord stirring in one woman’s heart a desire to pour into girls living in the community where her family is from.

Dr. Chao Tsuma and her husband James were already familiar with the people in Malindi, Kenya where James and his family are from. They had spent years ministering and church-planting in Nairobi while they raised their boys. However, after starting her doctorate journey at a theological seminary in Dallas, Texas, Dr. Chao felt a call to pursue the women in Malindi, specifically.

She collaborated with her church, Fielder Church in Dallas, Texas to lead short-term missionary teams to Kenya. While sharing the gospel with the women there, Dr. Chao was giving out sanitary pads, knowing that poverty and culture are often barriers to these women and girls acquiring these for themselves. A member of the Dallas church who was on the missionary team, Ashley Smith (pictured) observed this need and asked if Dr. Chao had ever considered investing in reusable period cups.

They began a journey together to look into how to fundraise and acquire the period cups for the women in Malindi. But it was not just about the period cups. They knew the whole purpose was to help the woman wholistically through showing her community and empowering her economically, but most importantly, through acknowledging her created value and challenging her spiritually through sharing the gospel.

Dr. Chao and Ashley have been joined by gifted and influential Kenyan women like Kanze Dena (pictured with Dr. Chao), Beatrice Mweni (a.k.a. Momma Betty), and many more who desire to use their God-given talents and impact in the community to share the hope of Jesus Christ to women.

She Stands Kenya continues to equip women leaders with Biblical principles for every day living.
