Hope in Her Hands: How Period Cups Are Changing Momma Betty’s Story

When Momma Betty lost her husband in 2019, her world changed overnight. Her late husband, a beloved elder in their local church, had been her life partner, her spiritual support, and the backbone of their home. With his passing, she was left with more than grief—she was left with responsibility. A daughter and four granddaughters now looked to her for provision and direction. The place they had called home for years was no longer theirs, and Momma Betty had to start over.

A New Beginning

Her new beginning was humbling. She began building a modest home—a structure with brick walls and iron sheets for a roof. The floor remained unfinished, just bare earth beneath their feet. There was no pit latrine yet, only plans and prayers.

Among her many burdens, one loomed every month: feminine hygiene. It cost $6.22 each month to buy sanitary products for the girls. In a home where every coin counted, choosing between buying food or pads was a painful routine. Some months there simply wasn’t anything to spare.

A God Who Sees

But God saw Momma Betty.

Three months ago, She Stands Kenya introduced Momma Betty and her family to period cups—a long-term menstrual hygiene solution that is reusable and sustainable. Since then, everything has changed.

Now, that $6.22 goes toward food for the table. Her granddaughters go to school with confidence, even on their period days. They no longer miss class. They no longer shy away during P.E. or sit out during recess. The fear of staining their uniforms—something that brought shame and isolation—is now gone. Their joy is visible. Their classmates notice their smiles.

More Than A Period Cup

For Momma Betty, this is more than hygiene—it is help. It is hope. It is dignity. As a widow, she sees this as a direct touch from God—a ministry to her in her moment of need. She no longer walks alone in the struggle, she has the support of others.

God used something as simple as a period cup to lift a whole family.

Momma Betty’s story is one of quiet courage, steady faith, and now, fresh joy. She rejoices—not just because of what she has received, but because she sees her girls thriving. For her, this is what it means to change the story.
